Thai health authorities detect methamphetamine and sedatives in confiscated vape pods

Thailand’s Department of Medical Sciences has issued a public warning after laboratory tests on confiscated e-cigarette pods revealed the presence of methamphetamine and etomidate. According to the Bangkok Post, this marks the first time Thai authorities have detected this specific mixture of illicit stimulants and anesthetics in vape liquids.

The discovery was made during routine testing of seized vaping paraphernalia. Thai-language media, including Thansettakij, report that the lethal cocktail is being referred to locally as "Pot K." Etomidate is a short-acting intravenous anesthetic, and combining it with methamphetamine hydrochloride creates severe, potentially fatal health risks for users.

What this means for expats and tourists

Vaping is already strictly prohibited in Thailand. Importing, selling, or possessing e-cigarettes can result in heavy fines, confiscation, and in some cases, arrest or deportation. However, this new discovery significantly raises the stakes for anyone caught with a vape.

If police confiscate a vape pod that happens to be laced with methamphetamine, the possessor could face severe drug charges. Methamphetamine is a Category 1 illicit narcotic in Thailand, carrying harsh prison sentences. Claiming ignorance about the contents of a purchased vape pod is unlikely to hold up as a legal defense.
