The Thai Cabinet has formally approved a visa waiver for diplomats and government officials from Guatemala.
According to a report from Matichon Online (in Thai), the new resolution permits eligible Guatemalan passport holders to enter and stay in Thailand for up to 90 days without applying for a visa in advance.
What this means for you
For the vast majority of expats and travelers, this update will not change your immigration planning. This exemption is highly targeted.
- Who is eligible: Only Guatemalan citizens holding valid diplomatic or official government passports.
- Who is not eligible: Standard tourists, digital nomads, retirees, and business travelers from Guatemala holding regular passports.
- Duration: The exemption allows a stay of up to 90 days per entry.
If you hold a regular Guatemalan passport, you will still need to apply for the appropriate tourist or non-immigrant visa before traveling to Thailand.
Next steps
While the Cabinet has given its approval, the rule is not yet in force. As with all bilateral visa waivers, the implementation will take effect once the agreement is formally signed between the two nations and the corresponding order is published in Thailand's Royal Gazette. Until then, standard visa rules remain in place for all Guatemalan nationals.
