Swedish citizens living in Thailand have lost a key administrative tool for their visa renewals. As of October 1, 2026, the Swedish Embassy and its honorary consulates will no longer issue income certificates.
According to ScandAsia, September 30 was the final day for Swedes to request this document. The change is permanent, meaning applicants can no longer use an embassy letter to prove their monthly pension or income to Thai Immigration.
What this means for you
If you are a Swedish national who previously relied on an embassy-issued income letter for your Thai visa extensions, you must now shift to alternative financial proofs.
Because the embassy will no longer verify your income, you will need to meet Thai Immigration's direct requirements for proof of funds. This generally involves:
- Showing a seasoned lump-sum deposit in a Thai bank account.
- Providing evidence of regular international transfers into a Thai bank account directly from abroad.
Expats whose visa extensions are due in late 2026 or 2027 should immediately begin structuring their finances to meet these alternative requirements, as building a compliant transfer history or seasoning a bank deposit takes several months.
