Thailand Visa for Swedish Citizens
Sweden passport holders Β· Updated 2026-07-05
No β Swedish citizens do not need a visa for short trips to Thailand. You currently get 60 days visa-free on arrival, extendable once by 30 days at a local immigration office (1,900 THB). A change approved by the Thai cabinet on 19 May 2026 will cut this to 30 days once it is published in the Royal Gazette β it has not taken effect yet. For stays beyond that, you need an actual visa β the options below.
Sweden has one of Europeβs strongest winter-escape traditions to Thailand, with charter operators filling planes to Phuket from November through March. Swedish passports currently get 60 days visa-free at the border, which comfortably covers a full winter stay plus island hopping. Note the 19 May 2026 cabinet approval that will shorten this to 30 days once published in the Royal Gazette, with a 15-day lead time after publication.

Frequently asked questions
Do Swedish citizens need a visa to visit Thailand?
Not for short visits. Swedish citizens get 60 days visa-free on arrival (dropping to 30 days once the approved May 2026 change takes effect). A visa is only needed for longer stays or purposes like work, retirement or study.
How long can Swedish citizens stay in Thailand without leaving?
60 days visa-free plus one 30-day extension (1,900 THB) β 90 days total without a visa. Beyond that you need a visa such as the DTV (180 days per entry) or a long-stay visa.
Is Thailand really cutting the 60-day visa-free stay to 30 days?
Yes, the Thai cabinet approved the cut on 19 May 2026 as part of a wider immigration overhaul. The change takes effect 15 days after publication in the Royal Gazette, which has not happened yet. Until then, the current rules below still apply. We update this page as soon as the status changes.
What is the TDAC and do I need it?
The Thailand Digital Arrival Card replaced the paper TM6 form in February 2026. Every traveller must complete it online (tdac.immigration.go.th) within 3 days before arrival β it is free and takes a few minutes. Airlines increasingly check it at the gate.
What are the penalties if a Swedish citizen overstays in Thailand?
The fine is 500 THB per day of overstay, with a ceiling of 20,000 THB, settled when you exit. Stay months past your permitted date and you risk being banned from re-entry, from one year up to ten for extreme cases. A 1,900 THB extension at immigration buys 30 extra legal days.
Can Swedes drive in Thailand on a Swedish license?
You need an International Driving Permit alongside your Swedish license for cars and motorbikes; the Swedish license alone is not valid. Rental shops rarely check, but police checkpoints in tourist areas do, and insurance can refuse claims without a valid permit. Wintering regulars typically convert to a Thai license.
